Instrumentation

IAGOS observations are measured on instruments packages of different sorts:

  • IAGOS-CORE
  • IAGOS-MOZAIC
  • IAGOS-CARIBIC

IAGOS-CORE

The IAGOS-CORE instrument is composed of two packages. The main package called Package 1 is installed on all the aircraft of the fleet. It is in charge of ozone, carbon monoxide and water vapor measurements. A Back-Scatter Cloud Probe (BCP) is also installed on each aircraft of the fleet. In addition one of 4 optional packages called Package 2 can be installed:

  • Package 2a: measurement of NOy
  • Package 2b: measurement of NOx
  • Package 2c: measurement of Aerosols
  • Package 2d: measurement of greenhouse gases (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane)

IAGOS-MOZAIC

The IAGOS-MOZAIC instrument was composed of one package. This instrument was used during the former project MOZAIC. IAGOS-CORE instrument is an improved version of the MOZAIC one. Measurement methods are the same for IAGOS-CORE and IAGOS-MOZAIC.

IAGOS-CARIBIC

CARIBIC uses a special air freight container, filled with scientific equipment, which is deployed aboard a Luftdansa A340-600 on a monthly basis. During flight automatic instruments measure ozone, carbon monoxide and dust particles. In addition, large air samples are collected which are analysed later in the laboratory for a large number of species, including greenhouse gases, hydrocarbons and fluorocarbons. CARIBIC has joined IAGOS during the preparatory phase (IAGOS-ERI). More information here: https://www.iagos.org/iagos-caribic
